Rev. L. Ray Chandler, Jr. - Pastor

"Bios are always hard to do because you are never sure if you are giving the information people want to know or if you are boring people with too much information.

"I met this wonderful girl from Franklin, TN. by the name of Katherine Ray while we were both at Lambuth College (now University). Kat’s parents, Jim and Betty Ray, graciously allowed me to marry their only child on May 20, 1989 (Kat’s birthday). On July 8,1992 Sarah Lynn came into our lives and then 4 years later on June 7,1996 Bentley Ray came into the family.

"I was born on July 16,1966 in Memphis where we lived till I was in sixth grade. We moved to Dyersburg in 1978 where my father could start Chandler Acoustical Tile Company. My father, L. R. Chandler, Sr. died in 1987 after a three-year bout with cancer. My mother Maralyn Beck remarried several years ago to Lowell Beck and they live in Dyersburg. Also in Dyersburg are my brother and his wife, Burt and Jeri Chandler. My sister and her family, Kevin, Katy, Anna, and Amy, live in Collierville.

"An active church life has always been central to my life. In Memphis we were a big part of the Oakhaven United Methodist Church. My parents served in many different ways from UMYF counselors to church officials. When we moved to Dyersburg we joined Dyersburg First where all of my family became gracious servants and leaders.

"I am a 1984 graduate of Dyersburg High School. In 1988 I received my Bachelor of Arts Degree Cum Laude from Lambuth College. In 1991 I received my Master of Divinity Degree “Thank the Laude!” from Vanderbilt University. At this present time I have no further educational plans except for fulfilling the educational dreams of my children. I only have one reward that I want to boast about. I proudly am an Eagle Scout.

"My appointments have been:

  • 1990-1991 Internship at Community Care Homeless Fellowship in Nashville

  • 1990-1991 Tucker’s Crossroads-Union-Mt. Olivet-Mary Chaffin Memorial in Lebanon

  • 1991-1995 Oakland —Palma in Marshall County, Kentucky

  • 1995-2001 Associate Minister at Emmanuel in Memphis

  • 2001-2002 East Trinity in Jackson

"My loves are Jesus Christ, The United Methodist Church, my family, and my friends. I enjoy football (UT, Steelers, Titans) and basketball (Vols, KY) though I have no athletic skill whatsoever. I love Classic Rock, Classic Music, and Radio Disney. My five favorite movies are Rear Window, Quiet Man, On Golden Pond, Live and Let Die, and Footloose. My favorite books are the Harry Potter Series."
